How Often Should Your Child See a Pediatrician?

Pediatric Visits

When you have your new little bundle of joy, you probably wonder how often your child will need to see our pediatrician. The seven excellent doctors at 7 Days Pediatrics, located in Edison, South Plainfield, Perth Amboy, and Woodbridge, NJ, are awaiting your visit to answer any questions you may have regarding childcare and when to visit our doctor.

Childhood Healthcare

So your first child was just born, and you have questions about when your child should be seen by our doctor. A newborn should have their first doctor's visit two to three days after birth.

Our doctor will check your baby's development during this visit as well as answer any questions you may have. From this visit, your child should have six more regular visits in one month, two months, four months, six months, nine months, and one year. These visits are important as our doctor checks for developmental milestones such as rolling over, grasping objects, and making appropriate eye contact.

These milestones are markers to see if your child's growth and development make gains. If you notice that your child is continually behind in developmental milestones, talking with our doctor about the next steps would be beneficial for you and your child.

Signs/Symptoms Flagging a Doctor's Visit

Your child is not feeling well, so when do you call the doctor? As your child gets older and starts attending daycare or school, they will eventually get ill.

Knowing when to call the doctor is very helpful. According to 7 Days Pediatrics, located in Edison, South Plainfield, Perth Amboy, and Woodbridge, NJ, our pediatrician targets the signs when it is time to call for a sick visit appointment.

  • Difficulty breathing apparent in small children, such as stomach breathing
  • Decrease in wet diapers (8 wet diapers/day)
  • High fever of more than 100.5 degrees rectally in babies - older children 103.0 degrees or higher
  • Refusal to drink, showing signs of dehydration such as sticky gums/crying with no tears/limp body tone
  • Blood in stool or vomit
  • Stomach pain worsens, especially on the right side
  • Refusal to eat
  • Fever and worsening sore throat
  • Cough lasting longer than ten days
  • Vomiting over 24 hours
  • Worsening skin infection with increased redness/hardening of the skin/pus present

If you are in doubt, always act on the side of caution, and call our doctor. Have a pen/paper handy for any instructions from your doctor regarding your child's care in case the issue does not warrant an in-person visit.
