A sick child is never fun and if your little one is complaining of ear pain then chances are they may have an infection. Of course, your ear infectionmain goal is to find the most effective treatment options out there to make sure that your child is quickly on the road to recovery. Find out more about treating your little one’s ear infection and how our Perth Amboy and Fords, NJ pediatricians, Dr. Hung Nguyen and Dr. Nimisha Shukla, can help.

What are the warning signs of an ear infection?

It isn’t always easy to figure out what issues your child is having, particularly if they haven’t learned to talk yet. Even if your child hasn’t started talking look for these clear-cut signs that your child may be dealing with an ear infection:

  • Issues falling or staying asleep
  • Fussiness or irritability
  • Crying
  • Pulling at the ear
  • Fever (this is most common in babies and young children)
  • Ear drainage
  • Balancing problems
  • Trouble hearing

How is an ear infection treated?

One of the most common types of ear infections is a middle ear infection, which our Perth Amboy and Fords children’s doctor will easily be able to treat with at least a one-week dose of antibiotics. When you bring your child in for care not only will we prescribe medications to heal the infection but we can also provide you with other options for how to manage your little one’s symptoms. Children can often get temporarily relief from pain and discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen.

Sometimes it isn’t always easy to be able to make a definitive diagnosis as to whether or not your little one has an ear infection, which is usually more common with children under the age of 2 years old. If this is the case and your child isn’t experiencing severe pain or a fever, then we may wait a couple days to see if the earache has gone away on its own. There are instances where an earache isn’t caused by an infection and there are also ear infections that heal without needing antibiotics.

Once your child starts taking their medication, they should start to notice an improvement in their symptoms within a few days. If it’s been several days and your child’s illness is about the same then it’s time to give us a call. Your child may need a different type of antibiotic.

Your child’s health is vitally important. No matter whether they are suffering from an ear infection or they need a sports physical, the medical team at 7 Days Pediatrics in Perth Amboy and Fords, NJ is here to help. Schedule your next visit for your child today!
